3. Food Emergencies: A Practical Approach
to Prevention and Control: By Mr Himmat Rai
This book explains that the old adage 'prevention
is better than cure' is also the best approach in terms
of food hazards. However, if the proactive food safety
management systems fail, a food business should be in
a position to bring the incident under control quickly
and effectively. The preventative role of Hazard Analysis
Critical Control Point (HACCP) and traceability are
discussed, whilst highlighting the importance of a crises
management system. This book brings together all the
relevant material on the prevention and control of food
emergencies into a single publication, furnishing the
reader with a sound knowledge of the issues concerning
food emergencies, with particular emphasis on the practical
implications of the law and its mechanisms.
The nature of the UK food industry and consumer attitudes towards food safety are
explored. Also, a number of prominent historical food emergencies are examined, in
order to elicit lessons to be learnt for handling such incidents in the future. Whilst
reviewing the legal provisions and the mechanisms for dealing with food emergencies
of varying scale and severity, including those at international level, the text is
intended to focus on the practical implications for the food industry.
As the trade in food forms a major part of the global
economy, the critical role of the Codex Alimentarius
Commission is examined, particularly with respect to
the prevention and control of international food emergencies.
In view of major developments in European food law,
Chapter Eight looks at the likely impact of the 'General
Food Law Regulation' on the food industry.

Book Review by A Puri:
A book of immense value, December 12, 2004
Reviewer: Mr A Puri from Birmingham, UK
As a solicitor, I have appreciated the clear and straightforward
approach adopted by Rai for the nature of this text.
It shows that the author is comfortable in his field
and has extensive experience.
The text is user-friendly and highly readable. There
is consistent and lucid explanation with no dilution
of content. It also complements the whole 'food safety'
series printed by the publishers.
I readily recommend this practical guide to all practitioners and students interested in
food safety. It has been published at a time when food emergencies have become high
profile and the market demands practitioners to have a good grasp of the relevant
legal framework.
